Liebe Mitstreiter in Sachen Digitaldruck!
an mich wenden. Andreas Weber

At your request PODi's Applications Forum comes to Europe
Rome, Italy March 3-4, 2003.
Last November in San Francisco, PODi conducted its first Applications
Workshop. The event brought together PODi member companies and
leading-edge users of digital print, to explore the new sorts of
applications and workflows that are being enabled by breakthroughs in
open standards and digital print technology. Response from attendees
was excellent:
* Unquestionably a valuable experience
* Extremely interested in PPML workflows
* We have lots of ideas of what we'll do with this new information
We also heard from persons who wanted to attend, but couldn't make the
journey all the way to California. So we are bringing the event much
closer to home. Registration is now open for the Rome event.
To register, go to Events at www.podi.org

www.podi.org/content.asp?nav=events§...g=signup-2
Reservations for hotel rooms at the Four Points Sheraton Roma West are
based on availability so act now.
What Attendees Will Get From the Workshop:
* Best practices for implementing efficient workflows for digital
printing applications.
* Survey of current software applications for creating these workflows
* Introduction to developer tools including PPML Open Source and
Digital Print Ticket
* Demonstrations of software applications and PPML hardware will be
provided by leading providers
* Live face-to-face interaction with members of PODi's technical
working group, which created the standard
* Hands-on experimentation with XSLT, with PPML output previewed on the
screens of PPML RIPs Who should attend?
* Implementers of variable print workflows: digital prepress managers ,
database managers, or IT staff responsible for designing new workflows
* Software developers for vendors of digital print solutions
* Software developers for CRM vendors will learn how to integrate
offline media (print) into their workflow. Relevant digital print
applications include:
* Direct Mail
* Fulfillment (e.g. documents on demand)
* Template based applications (e.g. collateral on demand)
* Transactional applications (e.g. CRM statements)

The need The need became increasingly clear in the last half of 2002,
as PODi researched the industry for the third edition of its Best
Practices in Digital Print book. As detailed in that report, the
pace of innovation and evolution in digital print has accelerated to
the point where it's sometimes difficult to even identify what type of
print job we were looking at. This creates both problems and
opportunities for users and for product planners - for anyone who needs
to understand what's happening and anticipate the foreseeable future.
Market segment boundaries are increasingly blurred, and boundaries are
evaporating between digital print workflows and applications.
Perhaps most importantly, the rapid onset of open standards is creating
new opportunities to design new-wave workflows that can be
extraordinarily different from what was possible in the past.
* In the San Francisco workshop a new PPML workflow was demonstrated
that used the open Web standard XSLT to generate complete PPML print
streams directly from raw data, with extraordinary speed.
* PODi's new PPML Templating specification formalizes that application
into an open standard, and allows using PERL (as well as XSLT), further
opening the workflow
* In January 2003, a PODi member found a way to integrate a $99
graphics package into its automated PPML workflow, instantly adding
data-driven graphics to a system that never had it.
Clearly, a burst of acceleration has been enabled in what can be done
with digital print workflows. What does the future hold? What will you,
your customers, and your competitors be doing 6-24 months from now, and
how will they (and you) be doing it?
